Pet Dentistry

Dental health is more important than most people realize. Dental disease can lead to many health problems, including heart, liver, and kidney disease, as bacteria from the teeth travel through the bloodstream. Even more alarming is how many pets are affected by the disease. It is thought that 80 percent of dogs and 70 percent of cats over three years of age have some form of dental disease.

Good dental health starts at home. Owners should brush their pets’ teeth, as it is the best way to help prevent dental disease. Dental chews and regular examinations by your pet’s veterinarian are also helpful.

Having your pets’ teeth examined by their veterinarian is very important. Despite regular brushing, your pet will likely require professional cleaning at some point. At Our clinic, dental cleanings are day procedures that require general anesthesia. Pre-anesthetic blood work is included with all dentals, and patients over the age of 7 require an IV catheter. This is the very best way to clean your pet’s teeth. During a professional cleaning, we can reach areas under their gums that owners simply can’t. Discolored teeth, red gums, bad breath, and even difficulty eating are all signs of dental disease. Unfortunately, some pets have such severe mouth problems that owners notice blood. If your pet shows any of these signs, it is essential to have them examined by your veterinarian as soon as possible.
